What Should I do to Help My Whitening Results Last Longer?

woman smiling with bright white teethAs teeth whitening represents an investment of time and money you want to keep your pearly whites looking bright. Here are some tips to help you do that:

  • Avoid foods and drinks that stain. This is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your white teeth—try to avoid pigment-rich foods and drinks that cause stains on your teeth. Some of the worst culprits are coffee, black tea and red wine, along with foods such as blueberries and tomato sauce.
  • The good news is you don’t have to give these up completely, but modify how you consume them. For example, you can add milk to your coffee. You also can rinse your mouth or brush your teeth immediately after consuming a food or drink that can stain.
  • Practice good oral hygiene. You should brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste to keep your teeth clean and healthy. Use a soft bristle brush and don’t brush too hard. In addition to brushing, you should floss at least once a day.
  • Schedule regular dental appointments. Twice-a-year cleanings by our hygienist can brighten your teeth and remove any stains that may be starting to form since you last had your teeth whitened.
  • Don’t smoke. If you smoked in the past, teeth whitening is a highly effective way to remove nicotine stains. If you don’t want the stains to return, don’t start smoking again.
