Airflow and Guided Biofilm Therapy in Sydney

Healthy gums start with what you can’t see. Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is the gentle approach our Oral Health Therapist (OHT) team uses to find and remove that invisible layer before it hardens into tartar.

NEW PATIENTS

Looking Beyond Tartar Removal

A traditional scale and clean removes tartar once it’s already formed. GBT targets biofilm instead: the soft, living layer of bacteria that builds up daily and eventually hardens if it isn’t cleared. Our OHT team uses it because it reflects how CDC Dental approaches preventive care: identifying and removing biofilm before it hardens into tartar.

Who Guided Biofilm Therapy Is Especially Suited To

Because GBT uses a fine, low-abrasion polishing powder rather than metal instruments, it’s a gentler alternative for patients who need one, including those with:

  • Sensitive teeth or gums
  • Dental implants
  • Braces or Invisalign attachments
  • White spot lesions or early enamel concerns
  • A tendency to stain from coffee, tea, wine or smoking

Suitability for implants or orthodontic appliances is always confirmed with your OHT at your appointment.

What Happens During Your Appointment

Your OHT starts with a screening of your gums and overall oral health, then applies a dental disclosing dye that makes the otherwise invisible biofilm clearly visible. It’s a useful opportunity: your OHT can talk you through exactly what’s showing up, tailored to your own habits rather than a generic script.

From there, a warm mix of air, water and fine erythritol powder gently lifts biofilm, surface stains and early calculus, with a slim flexible nozzle extending the same gentle approach below the gumline where needed. Only where hardened calculus remains, which is usually a small fraction of the mouth by this stage, do we use ultrasonic instrumentation, with patient comfort in mind.

A second dye check confirms everything has been cleared, before your OHT finishes with personalised home care guidance and timing for your next visit.

Outcomes Patients Notice

Many patients find GBT noticeably gentler than a traditional clean, particularly if they came in with sensitive teeth or gums. Starting with biofilm removal rather than metal instruments is intended to help reduce biofilm accumulation as part of ongoing preventive care. GBT supports, rather than replaces, the regular check-ups Dr Tony Goswell (Dentist) uses to assess your teeth and gums.

The Team Behind Guided Biofilm Therapy

GBT at the practice is delivered by our Oral Health Therapists, clinicians in their own right who focus specifically on the long-term health of your gums. They work alongside our dentist as part of a coordinated approach to prevention. Read more on our Meet the Team page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Guided Biofilm Therapy?

Guided Biofilm Therapy, or GBT, is a structured hygiene protocol that identifies and removes biofilm, the bacterial layer that can harden into tartar if it is not cleared.

How is Airflow different from a traditional scale and clean?

Airflow uses a fine, low-abrasion powder to lift biofilm and surface stains rather than relying mainly on metal instruments. It is a different approach, rather than one that is necessarily suitable for every patient.

Does GBT hurt?

GBT is designed with patient comfort in mind, and many patients describe it as gentler than a traditional clean. Individual sensitivity can still vary.

Is Airflow suitable for people with dental implants?

The erythritol powder used during treatment is commonly used on implant surfaces. Your OHT will confirm whether it is appropriate for your individual circumstances.

Can I have GBT if I have braces or Invisalign attachments?

GBT can often be used for patients with braces or Invisalign attachments. Your OHT will tailor the treatment to your specific appliance.

Is Airflow suitable for people with sensitive teeth or gums?

Many patients with sensitive teeth or gums ask about Airflow because it uses a fine, low-abrasion powder. Your OHT will assess whether it is suitable for you.

Will GBT remove stains from coffee, tea or wine?

It is designed to help lift surface staining from coffee, tea, wine and smoking, although results vary depending on how established the staining is.

Who provides GBT at CDC Dental?

Our Oral Health Therapists provide the treatment, working alongside Dr Goswell as part of your preventive care.

How often should I have this treatment?

The recommended timing will depend on factors such as your gum health, biofilm accumulation and staining. Your OHT will discuss this with you and review it at future recall visits.

Is GBT covered by health insurance or claimable through HICAPS?

Cover varies between health funds and policies. Speak with our team when booking to confirm how it may apply to you.
