Why a Custom Mouthguard Matters

Dental injuries are common in contact and collision sports, and they can be costly to manage. A chipped, cracked, or knocked-out tooth may require crowns, implants, or other restorative care. A well-made mouthguard is designed to cushion impact, absorb shock, and help protect the teeth, lips, gums, and jaw during sport.

A secure fit can also make it easier to breathe and communicate without constantly adjusting the appliance. Sports where a mouthguard is often recommended include AFL, rugby, basketball, netball, hockey, and martial arts.

Many of our patients work in the CBD and fit sport into busy mornings, evenings, or weekends. A custom mouthguard is a practical option for regular use and can be made in colours to match your team.

Comfort Sits naturally in the mouth Often bulky

Proper fit plays an important role in mouthguard performance.

The Fitting Process

Getting a custom mouthguard at CDC Dental is straightforward. Dr Tony Goswell (Dentist) will carry out a brief dental assessment, take a digital scan or impression of your teeth, and arrange fabrication based on your bite.

You will return for fitting, and any minor adjustments will be made at that appointment. The process is simple and suitable for children, teenagers, and adults.

If you wear braces or are undergoing orthodontic treatment, please mention this during your appointment so we can discuss the most appropriate options for you.

For Growing Kids and Teens

Children’s teeth and jaws change as they grow, which means a mouthguard that fitted well last season may no longer provide the same level of fit. We recommend having your child’s mouthguard checked annually and replaced when necessary.

For teenagers in orthodontic treatment, timing and compatibility can be discussed during your visit.

How Long Does a Sports Mouthguard Last?

For kids and teenagers, annual replacement is often needed as the mouth develops. For adults, a well-maintained custom mouthguard may last several years. It should be reviewed if it shows visible wear, feels loose, or no longer fits comfortably.

If you have had significant dental work since your last fitting, it’s advisable to have your mouthguard checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are custom mouthguards better than chemist mouthguards?

Custom mouthguards are made from an impression or scan of your teeth, which allows for a more secure fit. They are designed to provide improved stability and shock absorption compared to generic boil-and-bite options.

How much does a custom sports mouthguard cost?

Costs vary depending on individual needs. Please contact the practice for current pricing information.

Can my child wear one with braces?

This is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Please mention orthodontic treatment at your appointment so Dr Tony can advise on the most suitable protective option.

How long does it take to make?

In most cases, your mouthguard is ready within a short turnaround period. A specific timeframe will be discussed at your appointment.

Are sports mouthguards required for school sport?

Requirements vary by sport and school. Many contact sports strongly recommend or mandate mouthguard use. A custom-fitted option may provide a more secure fit where protection is a priority.

How often should a mouthguard be replaced?

Children and teenagers often require annual replacement as their teeth and jaws continue to develop. Adults should consider replacing the mouthguard when it shows wear or no longer fits securely.

What colours are available?

Custom mouthguards are available in a range of colours, including options to match club or team colours. Ask about available options at your fitting.
