Custom Sports Mouthguards in Sydney
Protect your smile with a professionally fitted custom sports mouthguard. A dentist-fitted mouthguard is individually made for your teeth and designed to provide a more precise fit and greater comfort than over-the-counter options.
Why a Custom Mouthguard Matters
Dental injuries are common in contact and collision sports, and they can be costly to manage. A chipped, cracked, or knocked-out tooth may require crowns, implants, or other restorative care. A well-made mouthguard is designed to cushion impact, absorb shock, and help protect the teeth, lips, gums, and jaw during sport.
A secure fit can also make it easier to breathe and communicate without constantly adjusting the appliance. Sports where a mouthguard is often recommended include AFL, rugby, basketball, netball, hockey, and martial arts.
Many of our patients work in the CBD and fit sport into busy mornings, evenings, or weekends. A custom mouthguard is a practical option for regular use and can be made in colours to match your team.
Custom vs Over-the-Counter Mouthguards
| Feature | Custom Dentist-Fitted | Over-the-Counter |
| Fit | Precise, made for your teeth | One-size or boil-and-bite |
| Comfort | Sits naturally in the mouth | Often bulky |
| Breathing | Easier airflow | Can restrict breathing |
| Shock Absorption | Better cushioning | Thinner protection |
| Durability | Longer lasting | Wears out quickly |

The Fitting Process
Getting a custom mouthguard at CDC Dental is straightforward. Dr Tony Goswell (Dentist) will carry out a brief dental assessment, take a digital scan or impression of your teeth, and arrange fabrication based on your bite.
You will return for fitting, and any minor adjustments will be made at that appointment. The process is simple and suitable for children, teenagers, and adults.
If you wear braces or are undergoing orthodontic treatment, please mention this during your appointment so we can discuss the most appropriate options for you.
For Growing Kids and Teens
Children’s teeth and jaws change as they grow, which means a mouthguard that fitted well last season may no longer provide the same level of fit. We recommend having your child’s mouthguard checked annually and replaced when necessary.
For teenagers in orthodontic treatment, timing and compatibility can be discussed during your visit.
How Long Does a Sports Mouthguard Last?
For kids and teenagers, annual replacement is often needed as the mouth develops. For adults, a well-maintained custom mouthguard may last several years. It should be reviewed if it shows visible wear, feels loose, or no longer fits comfortably.
If you have had significant dental work since your last fitting, it’s advisable to have your mouthguard checked.
